چکیده

14 The objective of this study was to develop a new measurement technique for the determination of pore size distributions (PSDs) of polymeric and ceramic membranes, including NF, UF, and MF membranes. The proposed method uses the fractional rejection (FR) concept of a solute in membrane pores. Experimental measurements were conducted using a high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipped with size exclusion chromatography (SEC) columns and a refractive index (RI) detector. A specially designed membrane filtration unit was also used. Two different macromolecules, including nonionic polyethylene glycols (PEG) and natural organic matter (NOM) with ionizable functional (carboxylic and phenolic) groups, were used as solutes. Membrane PSDs, determined with PEG and NOM, can be defined as absolute and effective membrane PSDs, respectively. Two different types of membranes (flat-sheet polymeric and tubular ceramic) were used in this work. Experimental procedures include three major steps: (1) measurements of relative molecular mass (RMM) distributions of solutes included in the membrane feed and corresponding permeate, (2) the calculation of solute FR, and (3) PSD determination. 15

The well-known results of the Dukhin–Shilov theory of the thin diffuse double layer polarization in low-frequency alternating fields is generalized in two directions: to include the surface conductivity of the stagnant layer and to describe a wide frequency range including both the low-frequency and the Maxwell–Wagner–O’Konski dispersions. The generalized expression obtained for the induced dip...

Cognitive biases for alcohol-related stimuli have been shown to play a major role in the maintenance of alcohol addiction, thus making their study an issue of paramount importance. Such cognitive biases have been traditionally investigated with low-level, non-inferential processes, such as the Stroop task [for a review see Psychol. Bull. 120 (1996) 3]. However, explanations for these effects [f...

BAY 73-7388, a novel aminomethylcycline, is highly active in vivo in a murine model of pneumococcal pneumonia

Objectives: BAY 73-7388 is the first antibiotic compound selected from the novel class, the aminomethylcyclines. BAY 73-7388 is under development for the treatment of severe bacterial infections including those caused by strains resistant to current classes of antibiotics. The efficacy of BAY 73-7388 was compared with that of vancomycin (VAN) and linezolid (LZD) in a mouse model of pneumococcal ...

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether there are differences in overall and cause-specific mortality rates of opiate users in maintenance treatment and of opiate users not in any drug treatment program in Vienna, Austria. A cohort of opiate-users enrolled in maintenance treatment in Vienna and a cohort of individuals involved in opiate-related emergencies from 1995 to 1997 were re...

To test the hypothesis that selective breeding for high voluntary wheel running negatively affects maternal performance in house mice, we observed maternal behavior and compared litter size and mass, in replicate lines of selected (N=4) and control (N=4) mice from generations 20 and 21 of an artificial selection experiment. At generation 21, selected-line females ran 2.8-times more revolutions ...
